La Bête Humaine (1938)

opinion: Zola was a pessimist! You know for sure that sun will not shine in this Renoir´s poetic fatalism 😦 If "The Maltese Falcon-1941" was the first Film-Noir, "La Bête Humaine-1938" could be the precursor of Film-Noir. Fate, corruption, femme-fatale, double-murder, double-cross, cuckolding, chain smoking, adultery, love triangle, suicide, gambling, alcoholism, madness, child abuse, robbery, tragedy … Continue reading La Bête Humaine (1938)

Bob, Le Flambeur (1956)

opinion: He looks like a gentleman. He behaves like a gentleman. He gambles like a gentleman. He is a broken gentleman. He is a gentleman-gangster. He is police-friend-gangster. Off course you hope that everything goes well for Bob (even the robbery), since he is a very nice guy. You don´t care about right or wrong. You … Continue reading Bob, Le Flambeur (1956)

Le Corbeau (1943)

opinion: Before Film-Noir became Film-Noir, Mr. Couzot already did Noir movies... he was the master of thrillers in France. But since the guy is looking … Continue reading Le Corbeau (1943)

Pepe le Moko (1937)

opinion: Inspecteur Slimane (Gridoux) is the poisoned spider providing the web to catch Pepe (Gabin) the famous thief from Paris, hiding himself inside the Casbah, so the local cops could not touch him... only Inspecteur Slimane who has a friendly relation to Pepe and is always around him, not hiding what are his intensions, to get … Continue reading Pepe le Moko (1937)

Therese Raquin (1953)

opinion: What can be expected from a wife (Therese/Signoret) oppressed by her protected, hypochondriac and simulated husband (Camille/Duby) as well by the cynical, protective and cruel mother-in-law (Madam Raquin/Sylvie)?  Therese is like a vulcan ready to erupt, dreaming about what she doesn't have in her life: freedom and love (maybe something else...). The day her "principe" appear for … Continue reading Therese Raquin (1953)
